罗格说北京奥运会是exceptional，沈冰等人解释为“无与伦比”?真能这么解释吗?
exceptional的意思是：
(1)far beyond what is usual in magnitude or degree，远超出常规。
(2)surpassing what is common or usual or expected，超出常规。
(3)deviating widely from a norm of physical or mental ability; used especially of children below normal in intelligence：远偏离常规，一般用于形容儿童能力和智力低下。
所以罗格的exceptional，只能解释为第(1)和第(2)个意思。我的理解是：罗格想用这个词说明北京奥运会是“大大超出常规的”，主要指我国投入了大量的人力物力，还有就是总体成绩很好，还出现了两个超人。
但这是不是达到了“无与伦比”的程度呢?似乎还没有，因为exceptional应该是一个中性词，虽然在某些场合偏褒义。如果他真要说北京奥运“无与伦比”，我认为应该多用一些褒义词，如gorgeous、grandiose、 excellent、marvellous、prodigious、spectacular等，至少要三个，而且还应该神采飞扬地说出。“无与伦比”这个词，在汉语中的地位是很高的，充满了褒义，不能和exceptional等价。“无与伦比”直译成英语应该是have no rival，unprecedented。我觉得罗格选这个词是很慎重的，我认为充分表达了他的意思。他当然要赞扬北京奥运，而且北京奥运绝对配得上“无与伦比”，但罗格的语气似乎没那么强。我的理解是：他要赞扬北京奥运会的规模，又要给历届奥运会留点面子，尤其要考虑下届举办国英国的感受。
我们搞的奥运会确实宏大，西方人也震惊，但未必赞同这种方式，因为连张艺谋都说，这种规模也就我们和北朝鲜能搞出来，如果用上高科技，全球只有我们能搞出来。这是我们的体制决定的。西方的体制决定了他们在耗费巨资之前要充分征求纳税人的意见，不可能按照我们的方式搞。所以罗格说本届奥运是exceptional，虽然有赞扬的意思，但不能和“无与伦比”划等号。
